Supergroup” to feature on “Rock Star
Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke have formed a new “supergroup” called Supernova and will appear on the second season of the reality TV series Rock Star to search for a singer. The act will reportedly cut an album once a vocalist is found and release it in 2007, with a tour to follow. Ex-Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke will return as hosts of the CBS-TV series, which debuted last year with INXS finding a singer to replace late frontman Michael Hutchence.
Alice In Chains and Van Halen were both approached for Rock Star’s second season, but turned it down. Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney told us that they had no interest in using the show to find a replacement for late Alice frontman Layne Staley: (Cantrell)”The greatest quote ever came out of the Van Halen camp. They offered it to them too and I guess Eddie said, ‘Yeah, we’ll do it, right after I pull a piece of shit out of my pocket and eat it.'”(laughter) (Kinney) “I mean, I don’t know, I think that stuff works for people but, you know, we’re not trying to replace the guy. You know, we’re not trying to find a guy and keep the ball rolling. If we were gonna do that, we would have done that long ago.”
The second season of Rock Star will air later this year. Celebrity guests will appear on the show this season, with Dave Navarro saying, “Friends of mine, like Slash, Macy Gray, Moby and Rob Zombie, will join us and throw in their two cents about who should stay and who should go.”
Tommy Lee is no stranger to reality TV, having starred in his own Tommy Lee Goes To College last summer for NBC. He is still a member of Motley Crue.
Newsted left Metallica in 2003 and currently plays in Voivod, who will release a new album called Katorz this spring. Clarke has played with various artists since departing Guns N’ Roses in the mid-Nineties.
Alice In Chains has reunited and will tour the U.S. and Europe this spring and summer, possibly with a series of guest vocalists.
