-Hey, we’re back! Sort of. I told the writers we’d come back from
hiatus next week but then I got the bright idea to do a Super Special
Love ‘n’ Kisses Valentine’s Day issue this week. Actually I just
wanted to run some press releases that had accumulated in my in-box
during our break… There’s also a trio of reviews done by Mr. Rick.

-Early Mike Portnoy Recordings Unearthed!

It’s no secret that before Dream Theater was Majesty. But before
Majesty, Mike Portnoy (mis)spent some time of his youth recording with
S.A. Adams. The then-18-year-old Portnoy did quite a few day & evening
sessions with Adams working on what became the foundation of Adams’
body of work. “I never hid the fact that we had worked together, and I
was content to re-examine, re-arrange & re-record some of the tracks
throughout my 6 album catalog. But, ever since I mentioned that ‘Two
Steps’ off my 2001 STOVEPIPE CD was originally done with Mike back in
’86, more people than usual said they were interested in hearing the
original Portnoy version.” Adams continues “and when I did the guitar
giveaway at the 2005 Bang Your Head Festival (wherein to enter the
contest, one had to have knowledge of the Adams / Portnoy connection),
more people wanted to know if these tracks would ever get released.
Well, after a bit of back & forth e-mailing with Mike, it’s time to
dust off some musical history.”

Recorded from December 28th, 1985 through January 11th, 1986 at Mike’s
Long Beach apartment, S.A. Adams: UNEARTHED: THE MIKE PORTNOY
SESSIONS, VOLUME 2, will be a big surprise for Dream Theater / Mike
Portnoy fans and a feast for those starved for pure metal mayhem. “The
material is definitely NOT progressive rock / prog-metal — It’s
serious sledgehammer-in-the-balls metal. Fans of Motorhead, Exciter,
Raven, early Megadeth, Venom & Tank will definitely find a home with
this disc. It still amazes me to this day is Mike was able to do Dan
Beehler / Charlie Benante style drumming before he could legally touch
a bottle of beer! If anyone has any doubts of Mike’s talent, just
listen to what he was doing at 18 years old. It might be a surprise to
some people that Mike got inducted into Modern Drummer magazine’s hall
of fame, but definitely not a surprise to me.”

But didn’t the nucleus of Dream Theater already get put together when
Portnoy met “The Johns” at Berklee in September of 1985? “Mike & I
recorded during Majesty’s off time. We had already burned tape over
the summer of ’85, and these sessions were to supplement the June /
July recording we did. We were offered a contact with Combat Records
and wanting to make sure we could fulfill a contractual obligation,
the idea was to stockpile as much music as possible. However, once I
saw the enslavement papers, I mean, contract, this ‘project’ got
temporarily shelved.” A few weeks later Mike informed S.A. that he’d
be putting all his energy to Majesty, leaving Adams to dabble with
these multi-track masters throughout the late ’80s and begin the solo
career he still enjoys today.

-Zakk Wylde And Jim Breuer Team Up

New Rock And Roll Comedy DVD On Sale Now

HOLLYWOOD — Guitar legend Zakk Wylde and comedian Jim Breuer have
teamed up for “Crapshoot,” a new rock and roll comedy now available
exclusively on DVD. The free-flowing show combines Wylde’s larger than
life persona with Breuer’s hilarious comedic skills. The combination
of the two results in a hybrid show mixing reality, sketch comedy,
improv, and mind-blowing music.

“Crapshoot” was originally created and produced as a television pilot
by David Kister and Murray Oden. They paired Wylde’s intense energy
and musical gifts with Breuer’s freewheeling comedy and hardcore love
for rock, while gathering a stellar supporting cast o’ characters.
“Crapshoot” features “Mad TV’s” Mo Collins (“Mad TV,” “Arrested
Development” & “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”) and a variety of other
comedic talent for a well rounded show.

Once the Crapshoot.TV Web site was launched, featuring a few select
clips from the project, the site received over a million hits in its
first two months. With such high response, Kister and Oden decided to
release the project independently. The result is an unfiltered rock
and roll comedy DVD unlike anything on the market.

Zakk Wylde was an unknown teenager from New Jersey when he was
discovered by Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne. Since that time, Wylde has
been Ozzy’s lead guitarist. Wylde co-wrote many of Osbourne’s multi-
platinum albums, including NO REST FOR THE WICKED, NO MORE TEARS and
OZZMOSIS. In 1998, Wylde formed his own band, Black Label Society,
which has sold several millions of units worldwide.

Jim Breuer established himself on the comedy scene with a four-year
stint on “Saturday Night Live,” and his movie roles include co-
starring with Dave Chappelle in “Half Baked.” Breuer currently hosts
his own radio show, “Jim Breuer Unleashed,” which can be heard weekday
afternoons on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Raw Dog Comedy channel.

-Celtic Legacy News

[Note: We stole this from the band’s message board. – Tim]

Dave Morrissey writes:

“I’m hugely delighted to announce that Vladi (CL Manager) has agreed a
fee for Mark Wilkinson to create the cover artwork for the upcoming
album. As you may remember from last year, we were in discussions with
Mark to create a cover, but of course at the time things were very
much up in the air even to the point that at that stage it was still
being called THE THIRD LEVEL.

“With things now moving on a definite track we have finally been able
to agree a date for Mark to deliver the finished artwork which should
hopefully tie in somewhat with the completion of the album. So all
parties have agreed on a delivery date of late May for the artwork to
be completed. This is the first real date we have tied down as far as
the album’s progress is concerned. A late May deadline for the artwork
doesn’t however mean a late May deadline for the album, as after that
I will still have to render the rest of the package myself using
elements of Mark’s work as the base.

“But it does give us a target to aim for which has always been around
the July/August timeframe for an actual release and with Mark
Wilkinson working away on the sleeve design it frees me up to work the
important area of recording & production before I have to move into
the nut & bolts of the packaging.

“Once again the Boss (Vladi) has come through. But then we always
trusted that he would didn’t we? He’s never let us down once! And when
the artwork is finished…Vladi gets to keep the original artwork. I’d
call that a fine arrangement.

“For those of you not familiar with Mark Wilkinson’s work I suggest
you check out his work at .

“His most recent and most recognisable work is all over the place at
the moment in the guise of the latest album by The Darkness.”

-Magic Circle Music 2006 Plans

“We care about our bands, the quality of music and the metal fans more
than anyone else!”
Joey DeMaio – President Magic Circle Music

During Manowar’s storied career, the band faced the trials and
tribulations that confront musicians trying to make it in the music
business. Although Manowar have been triumphant in their battle to
succeed and have stayed their course through rough waters, they saw
many other bands fall to the perils of greed and commercialization in
the music industry. Manowar created Magic Circle Music to help other
bands avoid those same pitfalls by giving the power back to the
musicians and the fans.

Heavy metal is unlike any other musical genre in one way above all
others: Heavy metal is a way of life. Eschewing confidence, defiance
and uncompromising power, metal music is the lifeblood that flows
through the veins of fans and musicians alike. The bond and devotion
between those fans and musicians is undeniable. Magic Circle Music is
paving the way for a new era by creating a healthy and comfortable
home for musicians so that metal will thrive.

Magic Circle Music has many promising releases planned for 2006:

Magic Circle Music’s flagship act, Manowar, will continue to conquer
the world with a brand new single, “The Sons Of Odin,” followed by
their long awaited new album. This will mark the band’s ninth studio
album and continue their crusade to bring “Death To False Metal!”
Manowar will also continue their “Demons, Dragons And Warriors World
Tour,” featuring Rhapsody and Holyhell.

Rhapsody, masters of “film score metal,” will start off an industrious
2006 with the release of their first live album, LIVE IN CANADA 2005 –
THE DARK SECRET. Fans can also expect a live DVD in the near future.
Furthermore, lead guitarist Luca Turilli will be involved in the
release of two additional projects. His third full-length solo album
THE INFINITE WONDERS OF CREATION will display awe-inspiring six-
stringed wizardry. Turilli will also introduce his new project, Luca
Turilli’s Dreamquest, with their debut album LOST HORIZON.

Magic Circle Music is proud to unveil a refreshing new female-fronted
melodic power metal act Holyhell. Many fans have already witnessed
this band live as the support act for Manowar and Rhapsody during the
“Demons, Dragons And Warriors Tour 2005.” This band impressed the
metal world with their amazing epic anthems without even releasing an
album. Now, in 2006, Holyhell will unleash their debut single and

Bludgeon are finalizing their sophomore release, entitled WORLD
CONTROLLED, for early 2006. The Chicago act’s crushing debut album
CRUCIFY THE PRIEST introduced Bludgeon’s intense brand of death/thrash
to the metal world. WORLD CONTROLLED promises to deliver more of that
same brutality.

Magic Circle Music will also proudly present new releases from
Feinstein and Jack Starr’s Guardians Of The Flame, with much more on
the way in 2006!

-Sweden’s Backyard Babies To Release LIVE LIVE IN PARIS

Having spent the better part of 2005 on tour with Social Distortion in
both Europe and North America, Swedish glam-punks Backyard Babies now
offer up a souvenir of their concert experience. LIVE LIVE IN PARIS
(no, that’s not a typo; it’s the verb followed by the adjective)
showcases 15 classics from the catalog of the band Kerrang! calls the
kings of “shit-kicking sleaze.” Recorded before a sold-out French
crowd, it provides a memorable snapshot of the booze-fueled gutter
rock that’s earned the quartet worldwide acclaim.

Recorded during the Stockholm Syndrome European tour, LIVE LIVE IN
PARIS will be just as cherished by Backyard Babies fans as ticket
stubs and concert T-shirts. For those not as well acquainted with
these Billion Dollar Babies, it’s a grade-A slab of Swedish garage
sleaze — the perfect primer on one of Europe’s top rock acts in the
setting in which they were meant to be experienced. (Drinks sold

For those scoring at home, 10 of the dozen tracks featured on last
year’s TINNITUS were performed live in Paris, including the
adrenalin-fueled “Made Me Madman,” the sneering “Highlights” and the
anthemic “Minus Celsius.” The remaining five — most notably the rare
non-album track “Powderhead” — have never before been released in
America. We challenge you to get any of the 15 out of your head.

Prepare for an ear-ringing, alcohol-fueled, mirrored-shades-and-
mascara riot of over-the-top, trashy punk n’ roll. Viva les Babies!

-Carl Palmer, Legendary Drummer And Progressive Rock Pioneer,
Announces First Solo North American Tour

Founding Member of Emerson Lake & Palmer And Asia Returns With New
Band, And All New Show: “Carl Palmer Celebrates The Music Of ELP”

Drummer extraordinaire Carl Palmer, one of the world’s most acclaimed
percussionists will embark on his first solo North American tour, with
his new power trio, The Carl Palmer Band.

The group, which features Palmer on drums and percussion, guitarist
Paul Bielatowicz and bassist Stuart Clayton, will serve up an evening
of classic ELP music, presented with exciting and innovative new
versions. An all-instrumental show, “Carl Palmer Celebrates The Music
of ELP” promises to be among the most musically compelling live shows
of 2006.

The tour, which will begin in late May and continue through early
July. Palmer’s band will cross the United States and include shows in
Canada. The Carl Palmer Band will be playing showcase clubs, intimate
theaters, and Performing Arts Centers.

“I am very excited to be returning to North America to see and play
for the many loyal fans I have come to know over the years,” says
Palmer, who announced his tour this week from Europe. Palmer has been
touring since 2002. “This is a trio, which ELP also was, but we have
replaced the keyboards with some very powerful guitar interpretations
of that classic music.”

Among the songs featured in the show are: “Tarkus,” “Fanfare For The
Common Man,” and “Hoedown.” Adds Palmer: “Although ELP had a lot of
vocal hit songs, we were really about musicianship and conveying the
spectrum of emotions through our instruments. Many of the classic
elements of these songs remain, but they have been updated and
reinterpreted through the my new band.”

In addition to nearly two hours of classic ELP songs, fans will be
treated to Palmer’s innovative and highly creative drum work. While in
his previous bands, ELP and Asia, Palmer’s remarkable drum solos were
often a high-point in those shows.

Carl Palmer first emerged on the British rock scene at the age of 17,
as drummer for the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown. After Brown recorded
his #1 hit, “Fire.” Palmer toured the US for the first time. He left
to form Atomic Rooster with Vincent Crane, another Brown alumnus. In
1970, he formed ELP with Keith Emerson (ex-The Nice) and Greg Lake
(King Crimson’s singer and bassist).

ELP, was among the pioneer supergroups launched during the era of
Blind Faith, Crosby Stills & Nash and Led Zeppelin. They eventually
became one of the biggest rock bands of all time, and the first group
to effectively blend rock, jazz and classical music for the pop music
masses. Together, on and off from 1970 through 1998, Emerson Lake &
Palmer sold over 35 million albums.

Upon the initial demise of ELP in 1980, Palmer formed another
progressive rock supergroup, Asia, with members of Yes, King Crimson
and The Buggles. With Asia, through much of the 1980s, Palmer would go
on to have a second multi-platinum career.

“My new group is a great band and I am certain the fans will enjoy our
unique versions of these timeless classics,” says Palmer. “I look
forward to returning to both the US and Canada and seeing everyone
once again.”

The initial leg of the tour is as follows. The complete list of shows
will be announced shortly.

-Nevermore And Evergrey Confirmed To Headline ProgPower USA VII

ATLANTA — Seattle band Nevermore and Swedish progressive/power metal
band Evergrey have been confirmed to headline ProgPower USA VII.

“This isn’t just another Evergrey appearance,” said Promoter Glenn
Harveston. “We are going to recreate the magic of the band’s DVD, A
NIGHT TO REMEMBER.” For only the second time ever, the Evergrey choir
will be joining the band on stage at the festival. In addition to the
exclusive choir appearance, the Poulenc String Quartet from Atlanta
will be performing with the band on stage.

“It feels absolutely great to be able to bring this special show to
Atlanta and the American audience!” said Evergrey guitarist/vocalist
Tom Englund. “This was only meant to be a once in a life time show,
but Glenn has made it impossible for us to say no. ProgPower USA has
been like a second home for us in America. It always feels great to
arrive there and know that the crew’s attitude will portray a
professionalism rarely encountered elsewhere.”

Nevermore will close out the festival on Saturday night. Fresh off
last year’s Gigantour stadium tour and a slot on Opeth’s last North
American tour, Nevermore has gained critical and fan praise for its
latest release, THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOR.

“I think the band deserves a hell of a lot more than another direct
support slot,” Harveston said. “The time for a full headline set is
now and this is the place to do it. If they want to play three hours,
then they are going to play three hours.”

Nevermore and Evergrey are joining German power metal band Savage
Circus, Dutch symphonic metal band Epica, Pyramaze, Wastefall,
Sweden’s Freak Kitchen, Finland’s Thunderstone, Italy’s Vision Divine,
and Denmark’s Mercenary, who is returning to ProgPower due to
overwhelming popularity at ProgPower IV.

How Far Would You Go To Fulfill A Promise?

A Van, “Acca Dacca” And The Australian Highway: Four Friends Make The
Ultimate Road Trip In Anchor Bay Entertainment’s Dbut Of
“Thunderstruck” On DVD

…high energy, fast moving rock and roll road movie… –

TROY , MI — Dirty deeds are done dirt cheap in this “discovery from
Down Under.” “Thunderstruck” is an Australian comedy about male
bonding fueled by rock ‘n roll and forged on a road trip across the
Outback. Starring some of Australia’s finest up and coming actors, the
film follows the journey of four lifelong mates who strive to fulfill
a pact, to inter one of their recently deceased friends…right beside
the late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott. The DVD also includes the film’s
theatrical trailer, the featurette: Making “Thunderstruck,” audio
commentary with director Darren Ashton and producer Jodi Matterson, as
well as some of the film’s deleted scenes. “Thunderstruck” will be
available for the SRP of $19.98 on September 6, 2005.

It’s 1991, AC/DC’s RAZOR’S EDGE tour, front row. Five buddies —
Ronnie, Sonny, Sam, Ben, and Lloyd — share one common devotion: the
hard rock band AC/DC. During the show, Sonny is thrust onto the stage
by his mates, diving right back into a frenzied crowd. The band’s
legendary lead guitarist Angus Young tosses Sonny his cap in
appreciation and the night couldn’t go any better, until the mates try
and crash the after-party, only to be tossed out promptly. Returning
home, the mates look up to see a 1978 poster of AC/DC’s deceased
frontman Bon Scott. This brief delay appears to save the boys, as
their impatient taxi driver leaves them behind and fatally crashes his
car. The friends become convinced their devotion to the band saved
them from sure death. Relieved and rejuvenated in their devotion to
the band, the boys make a pact: The first of them to die will be
buried by the other four alongside the grave of their hero, Bon Scott.

Many years later, they’ve grown apart, frustrated with how life has
progressed unfavorably, but none forget the pact made that night. When
Ronnie is killed by a freak lightning bolt, the four remaining friends
reunite, and motor his stolen ashes clear across the country, to Bon
Scott’s grave. On the way, the buddies run into all that’s bizarre in
the Australian Outback, and rekindle that rock ‘n roll flame that
forged their friendship all those years ago.

“Thunderstruck” stars some of Australia’s hottest new talent including
Damon Gameau (“The Tracker”), Stephen Curry (“The Castle”), Ryan
Johnson (“The Wannabes”), Callan Mulvey (“Heartbreak High”), and Sam
Worthington (“Dirty Deeds”). The film is directed by Darren Ashton,
produced by Jodi Matterson, executive produced by Al Clark and Andrena
Finlay and written by Shaun Angus Hall and Darren Ashton. An official
selection at the 2005 South by Southwest Film Festival, the film also
includes a cameo by Australian Premier and AC/DC devotee Geoff Gallop.
The film was distributed in Australia by Mel Gibson’s Icon Films.

The deal with Anchor Bay was negotiated by David Garber and Robert

DIR EN GREY – WITHERING TO DEATH. (B/B-) Warcon Enterprises LLC, 2006

Dir En Grey sounds like a heavy metal soundtrack to the newest bootleg
Jackie Chan or Jet Li movie. Or maybe they would be better described
as a metal anime soundtrack. As much as lead singer Kyo tries to
impress me with his/her voice with an amazing range from Dani Filth-
like growls to super-high melodic choruses in between, I still hear
“Robotech” or “Sailor Moon” background music. I think maybe my bias is
from the all-Japanese lyrics. I have no clue what is being sung 99% of
the time. And without that mental connection all I hear is gibberish.
And that’s saying a lot from a guy who loves Amon Amarth, Thyrfing,
and Eye Hate God. Plus I really don’t want to read lyrics for 14 songs
that I still won’t be able to sing with. Musically the rest of the
band is very competent and slightly more intense than any anime
soundtrack I have heard, but that is the problem. No matter how fast
or how hard or how angry WITHERING TO DEATH. gets, every song seems to
have the slow melodic ending credits music of (choose your own anime).
Even the best track #6, “Jesus Christ R’n R,” which has a great
sounding chorus and Chris Barnes-like graveling vocals, still reverts
to an “Adult Swim” ad for me. I feel sort of guilty for such a
negative review because I lack knowledge and understanding of the
Japanese metal scene. For all I know these guys might be the next big
metal revolution when Swedish metal finally dies. Yet I kind of doubt
it. – Rick Berg (

Well holy crap that is a lot of Sepultura. First of let me apologize
to all the Max Cavalera fans out there and say that current lead
singer Derek Green is my personal favorite of the two. And this double
CD proves why you old school fans should chill. Singing death metal in
the studio or clubs is one thing but Derek Green in front of that
massive crowd is freakin’ amazing. The CDs comprise 21 excellent
tracks that range the entire gauntlet of Sepultura albums. Now I know
that there has to be some behind the scenes magic to make this quality
a recording of a live show, especially one this huge, but I don’t
care. It sounds like I am in the front row being crushed along with
everyone else. There are a couple of times that Derek is lost behind
the blazing guitars and drums but otherwise this is a near Kiss-like
live album. If you love Sepultura this is the live recording you
desire. If you hate Sepultura or just Derek because you have super
special ears that only Max can soothe, save your money and go buy the
latest Nickelback album or whatever Max is working on. About the only
thing I really did not like is that the intro by (I think) Coffin Joe
and some of the band members in between songs is in Portuguese. I
would not mind understanding what is being said, yet even without that
understanding, it all sounds really cool and powerful and creepy which
is just fine by me. Definitely a great addition to your Sepultura
collection, but if this is your first foray in Brazilian death metal
$20.00 maybe a little expensive. – Rick Berg (

Dear God, even more Sepultura, but now not only for your ears but your
eyes as well. First of all I need a nap or two. Watching a Sepultura
concert DVD is much like watching any concert DVD, awesome because you
can pause and go to the bathroom or take a few weeks off and the show
is still there waiting for you like the Tell Tale Heart. And it is
also somewhat lame because being at a show, even a crappy one, still
connects more viscerally to your mind. You can feel that bass drum
kicking in your chest, along with that old fat headbanger who should
just give up the long hair and shave his head. And don’t forget the
smells and the smoke and the ladies yeah mmm. Anyway the first DVD is
concert footage of the double CD set. I still think Coffin Joe
introduces Sepultura but I can find no one who knows for sure. Except
now I get to see his pretty female friends. It’s pretty sweet yet sad
because I don’t understand Portuguese. Then after the typical
classical music intro Sepultura finally comes out. They play 20 songs
in an awesome death metal barrage of power and aggression. If you like
the music you may like the concert footage but it’s nothing new. If
you have seen one “live” music video you have seen them all. Example:
Wow the band is thrashing around having a great time, oh there’s a few
hundred people headbanging, oh a slightly shifted view of the band now
with blue lighting. Add in gratuitous shot of sweaty drummer and
massive mosh pits and repeat. The fun part of seeing the show is that
I now know that there were a bunch of guest artists who come out on
stage and helped the band sing and play guitar. A Brazilian rapper, a
former guitar player and a couple of other vocalists all join the show
at different points. Again the crappy part is that 95% of the spoken
words in between songs is in Portuguese. Even with the “Making Of…”
feature you only barely find who these guys are. There is also a band
biography (available in English) that gives a really detailed and to
the point account of who, what, why and how Sepultura came to be. Now
Disc 2 has a fun documentary by Derek Green that has all kinds of fun
and neat behind the scenes photos and clips that show his time with
the band. Thankfully it is in English (most of the time) and has
English subtitles for when it’s not. Then there is a slideshow of more
even band photos. There are six more video clips, three of which
(“Mind War,” “Bullet The Blue Sky,” “Choke”) are actual music videos
and three of which (“Nomad,” “Desperate Cry,” “Territory”) are even
more regular concert footage. All of this is very entertaining for
hardcore Sepultura fans but I’m not sure if someone who doesn’t like
them without Max or knows nothing about them would enjoy this much
stuff. With over three hours of DVD goodies I almost overloaded on the
Brazilian gods of death metal. This one is definitely only for members
of the Sepulnation. – Rick Berg (
